Professor Cunha is widely recognized as one of the pioneers in Brazil in the study of the hydrodynamics of active magnetic suspensions and complex fluids more broadly, including phenomena such as non-Brownian particle velocity fluctuations and shear-induced hydrodynamic dispersion. He established the research area of Microhydrodynamics and Rheology of active and passive complex fluids (e.g., magnetic suspensions, emulsions, elastic fluids, and living fluids) at the University of Brasília, Brazil. Over the course of his career, he has supervised numerous undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom are currently engaged in research, teaching, and professional activities in this field at the University of Brasília and at other academic institutions, as well as in industry, both in Brazil and abroad. A significant portion of his scientific publications stems from theses, dissertations, senior projects, and undergraduate research developed under his supervision. He has consistently placed strong emphasis on publishing collaboratively with his students. Professor Cunha has authored approximately 90 peer-reviewed articles in well-established international journals in the fields of microhydrodynamics and rheology of active and passive complex fluid flows. These include, among others, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, Physica A, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, Rheologica Acta, Biomicrofluidics, Powder Technology, Journal of Engineering Mathematics, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Applied Mathematical Modelling, and the International Journal of Multiphase Flow. His seminal contributions to the theory of hydrodynamic dispersion in suspensions have been widely cited and applied, particularly in the study of suspensions and emulsions, including the prediction of biological cell migration in microcirculatory flows.
